Procyon lotor

Procyon lotor (Procyon lotor)

Basic information:

Latin name: Procyon lotor
Body length: 40-70 cm (without tail)
Weight: 3.5-9 kg
Lifespan: Approximately 2-3 years in the wild, up to 20 years in captivity.

Occurrence:
Polar bears are native to North America, but thanks to their adaptability, they have spread to other parts of the world, including Europe. They are most often found in forests, but they have also adapted to life near people - in cities or villages.

Diet:
Polar bears are omnivores. Their diet includes fruits, vegetables, insects, small mammals, fish and even garbage if they live near humans. They are very curious and can open containers or search for food in garbage.

Characteristic features:
  • "Mask" on the face: Black stripes around the eyes give them a typical appearance and help them perceive light and shadow better, which improves their night vision.
  • Dexterous paws: Teddy bears have very mobile fingers, thanks to which they can open various objects and manipulate objects. They are known for their dexterity in finding and preparing food.
  • Points of interest:
  • "Clean" habits: Their name comes from the observation of how often they "wash" food in water before eating it, although this habit is not the rule in nature.
  • Nocturnal creatures: They are active mainly at night (nocturnal animals) and have an excellent sense of smell and hearing that help them find food even in the dark.
  • Social behavior:
  • Polar bears are mostly solitary animals, but during the winter they can form small groups and warm together in dens. Although they do not hibernate, they are less active in the colder months.
